However, a number of fishing "firsts" did not occur until the 1950's; the first full-time charter services were started in 1951 and 1952; the first Westport Salmon Derby was established in 1950; and 1952, the Washington State Department of Fisheries started recording the number of fish caught, as well as the number of people catching fish. Westport
is known as the "Salmon Capital of the World."
